Tri-County Technical College is offering two new computer technology certifications this fall to help meet workplace needs in Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties.

Tri-County students can now enroll to receive Cisco Network Administrator and Computer Technician certificates to better equip them for jobs now available in the local marketplace, according to Dr. Jackie Blakely, dean of the Business and Public Services Division at Tri-County Technical College.

“We did some research in the counties that we serve – Anderson, Oconee and Pickens – and we found that there is a great need for more emphasis on computer and information technology, especially in the areas of network administration and computer technicians that provide resources for help desks, Blakely said.

The Cisco Network Administrator Certificate teaches basic skills in network administration including Cisco router and switch configuration, security, maintenance, and troubleshooting. In addition, this certificate provides training needed to acquire the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Certification.

The Computer Technician Certificate teaches basic skills in the most essential IT technical tasks, including preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, network operation and basic web development. Additionally, this certificate provides the training needed to acquire the industry standard CompTIA A+ Certification and the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification.

Entry-level salaries for these types of IT positions range from $35,000 to $40,000 per year, with opportunities for advancement, Blakely said.

“There could be significant increases with experience, and when you have that associate degree, there is an opportunity at a lot of places that once you start working there, they will pay for you to get a Bachelor’s degree so you can continue your education for more promotability,” Blakely said.

The deadline to enroll is Aug. 12, with classes beginning on Aug. 23.
