Are you ready for Trojan football? The anticipation in Anderson, SC, is electric as Anderson University prepares to field its first-ever football team. This historic season is set to begin with a kickoff on September 7 at 1:00 PM, when the Trojans will face the St. Andrews Knights from Laurinburg, NC.
A New Era Begins
The excitement surrounding Anderson University’s new football program is palpable. At the helm is Bobby Lamb, a seasoned college coach with a storied career. Before joining Anderson University, Coach Lamb served as the head coach at Furman University from 1986 to 2010. He then took on the challenge of revitalizing Mercer University’s football program, leading the Bears back to the field in 2011 after a 72-year hiatus. Coach Lamb left Mercer in 2019, and now he brings his extensive experience and leadership to the Trojans.
State-of-the-Art Facilities
The new home for Trojan football is at what was once the Anderson University baseball field, previously the venue for the American Legion baseball team. The area has been transformed with the addition of a state-of-the-art Trojan Field House situated alongside the football field. This 43,622-square-foot facility includes top-notch amenities such as a 5,000-square-foot strength and conditioning room, the AnMed Sports Medicine Clinic, and versatile meeting rooms.
The stadium is also undergoing significant upgrades, with new seating arrangements to accommodate over 4,000 fans, ensuring a vibrant atmosphere for every game. A new practice field is also being developed to further enhance the team’s preparation and performance.
Meet the Coaching Staff
Coach Lamb has assembled a skilled and dedicated coaching staff to support the Trojans. The team includes Seth Strickland as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Malik Chevry overseeing the defensive backs, and Brett Hickman as defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach. Hickman brings a unique perspective, viewing coaching as a ministry that fosters both athletic and spiritual growth.
The coaching staff also features James Thurn (offensive line), Caleb Fuller (defensive line), Jordan Marshall (running backs), and AJ Jones (inside linebackers). Together, they are committed to building a successful program while nurturing the personal and academic development of their players.
The Team and Community Spirit
The inaugural season will be a landmark event, and the Trojan community is gearing up to show its support. Coach Lamb emphasizes the importance of community involvement, having spent significant time building relationships and raising funds for the program. This support, combined with the university’s strong administrative backing, has been crucial in laying the groundwork for a successful football program.
With over 90 players signed, including 22 transfer students with prior college experience, the Trojans are ready to make their mark. The team will embody the slogan “Trojan Triangle: Love, Serve, & Compete,” reflecting their commitment to excellence both on and off the field.
What to Expect
The Trojans’ first game is highly anticipated, with hopes of a strong performance that sets the tone for the season. Coach Lamb’s first game at Mercer was a dramatic win, secured with a last-second field goal, and fans are eager to see the Trojans make a memorable debut without the need for such dramatic finishes.
The season will culminate with a challenging matchup against Lenoir-Rhyne, currently ranked #13 in NCAA Division II. This game will test the Trojans’ mettle and showcase their progress throughout the season.
