Brewing up business with Mayor Terence Roberts: Programs for entrepreneuers

Date

Editor’s note: This is the third in a series of sit downs at Electric City Brewing with Anderson Mayor Terence Roberts, owner of Terence Roberts State Farm. Roberts will celebrate 34 years as a small business owner in July.

Making sure that small business owners and entrepreneurs have the tools they need to succeed is one way the City of Anderson promotes business and economic development.

Entrepreneurial programs are a primary focus at the City of Anderson Economic Development office, says Anderson Mayor Terence Roberts, who has been a small business owner for more than 30 years.

“We felt there was a need to help existing businesses and startups,” Roberts said. “As a small business owner, sometimes we caught in our own silos, and we have to make sure that we’re talking out loud to other people – people that can give us advice like a board of directors type conversation.”

City of Anderson Economic Development programming is available at no charge to existing businesses, start-ups and even students to promote successful entrepreneurship in the community.

For example, The Brew takes place every Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. where business ideas receive community feedback. Patterned after 1 Million Cups, a national program designed to educate, engage and inspire entrepreneurs, business owners receive feedback from fellow businesspeople about a new idea or venture and suggestions on tackling a particular issue.

And Build Your Own Business is presented the third Thursday of every month from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., covering topics from accounting and legal to HR and marketing. All sessions are free, and lunch is provided.
