Debra Walker finds a home in retail in her hometown of Anderson

Date

Debra Walker had never worked in retail before opening Dollars Worth in Anderson. Matter of fact, it was her first time using a cash register.

“I’ve always wanted to own my own business and to have something after I retired,” Walker said.

So, after 20 years as a property manager, the Anderson resident opened her discount store in Windsor Shopping Center on East Greenville Street.

Dollars Worth bills itself as a one-stop shop for hardware, housewares, health and beauty products, office and party supplies, food and snacks. Walker said she wanted a business that would be a positive presence in the community by providing the staple items found in most dollar stores, along with some unique merchandise.

Since opening in 2019, Dollars Worth has become known for its wide range of balloons and gift bags and its plentiful selection of incense. And as its name suggests, about 90 percent of the store’s merchandise cost $1.00. Greeting cards, for example, are two for $1.00.

Walker takes pride in her small store, working hard to keep it clean and organized and to provide customers with excellent service, a smile, and a listening ear, when needed.

“I love being part of the Anderson business community,” Walker said. “This was a dream of mine having worked in Greenville for 15 years. I was never in Anderson except for Saturday and Sunday, so I felt sort of detached when it came to knowing what was going on in my own hometown.”

With the holidays approaching, Walker said to watch the store’s Facebook and Instagram pages for special events and promotions.
