First-time car buyers have a lot of questions, from how to find that right first car to how to pay for it.
If you’re a first-time car or truck buyer, knowing your credit history is perhaps the most important thing, according to D.J. Tippins, sales consultant at Grainger Nissan of Anderson, an Anderson SC Living partner.
“Buying a car is like sitting on a three-legged stool,” Tippins said. “The first leg is going to be credit, the second one is collateral and the third one is equity. Credit is the most important one because it dictates the other two legs of the stool.”
Knowing your credit score allows you to understand what type of vehicle you can afford, what your interest rate will be and what you can expect your monthly car payment to be.
Knowing your needs and driving habits also is important when buying a vehicle. For example, do you want a compact car for driving in the city or something bigger to fit a family and their cargo?
“Understanding your own situation and being able to explain all those things is helpful” Tippins said. “The more we know, the more we can help you make an informed decision.”
At Grainger Nissan of Anderson, sales consultants conduct a needs assessment that helps customers determine the best vehicle to serve their needs. Considerations include vehicle features, price, monthly payments and financing options.
“If you’re a first-time car buyer, you’re more than likely going to finance it, so we’re going to walk you through what that process looks like,” Tippins said. “That includes taking your credit app, getting you connected with a bank and getting the best (interest) rate that’s available.”
And because first-time car buyers don’t have a car to trade in, making a down payment – even a small one – is important.
“What banks like to see sometime is how much of your own skin you’re willing to put into the game.” Tippins said.
