Editor’s Note: Anderson SC Living is partnering with Rettew Creative to expand the audience for Storefront Stories as area businesses continue to rebuild from COVID-19. Bobby Rettew and digital media students from Anderson University’s Communications program recorded the first Storefront Story on April 22, 2021, and since have captured the experiences of almost 30 downtown businesses. Look for a Storefront Story every Wednesday here at Anderson SC Living.
Buying local became a mantra during the coronavirus pandemic as small business owners looked for ways to stay afloat during initial shutdowns that closed retail establishments, restaurants and entertainment venues.
Like many independent business owners, Carri Arbogast, owner of Brews on Main in downtown Anderson, found support from a loyal customer base and others looking to buy products made locally.
“My storefront story would have to be all of our customers reaching out, still, every day to make sure that we’re still here and we’re still okay, wanting to do what they can to contribute to our continued success,” Arbogast said.
During the pandemic, many customers came into Brews on Main in search of Upstate breweries and wine makers to support.
“What I like to tell them is that any purchase you make (at Brews on Main) is supporting an Upstate business,” she said.
A local taphouse focusing on craft beer and wine, Brews on Main has 17 taps of craft beers, ciders and wines from many regional brewers such as Birds Fly South Ale Project and Liability Brewing Company in Greenville, The Southern Growl in Greer, Hi-Wire Brewing and Highland Brewing Company in Asheville, NC and Olde Hickory Brewery in Hickory, NC.
