Storefront Stories: The Local Uptown

Date

Editor’s Note: Anderson SC Living is partnering with Rettew Creative to expand the audience for Storefront Stories as area businesses continue to rebuild from COVID-19. Bobby Rettew and digital media students from Anderson University’s Communications program recorded the first Storefront Story on April 22, 2021 and have since captured the experiences of almost 30 downtown businesses. Look for a Storefront Story every Wednesday here at Anderson SC Living.

It’s known as Anderson’s oldest downtown pub. A neighborhood hangout since 1971, the former Uptown Lounge became The Local Uptown in 2019.

Owners Sarah and Shane Dowler began running the business 12 years ago and last year were able to purchase the historic building at 301 N. McDuffie Street in downtown. The couple used the time during COVID-19 business closures to renovate inside and out for a fresh look and post-pandemic success.

“We’ve tried the whole time we’ve had it to keep the old Uptown Lounge vibe going while introducing some newer things to it, too,” Sarah Dowler said.

Another project launched by Dowler and a friend during the pandemic was Anderson Aid. With donations from the public, the Dowlers have fed nurses, doctors, police and other frontline workers.

“That’s taken off and it shows how Anderson is willing to come together and do for each other,” Mrs. Dowler said. “It restores your faith in humans.”

The Local Uptown reflects the traditional feel of pubs in the Dowler’s native England and Ireland. The menu includes burgers, wings and bite-sized offerings, along with local craft beers such as Thomas Creek and Sierra Nevada. The establishment features a patio and amphitheater, and hosts events including live music, art shows and karaoke.
