Veterans seeking work will receive priority during Honoring Our Veterans Virtual Job Fair on Feb. 24

Date

Veterans seeking employment will receive priority when the SC Department of Employment and Workforce Development stages a statewide Honoring Our Veterans Virtual Job Fair on Wed., Feb. 24.

Almost 80 companies from health care to manufacturing will participate in the online event that will be open to veterans and their family members only from 9 – 10 a.m. The public is invited to participate from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

With eight military installations, South Carolina has more than half a million veterans. When added to more than 62,000 Department of Defense personnel, there is a significant portion of the population that is, or once was, military focused, figures show.

The veteran community is vital to helping fill workforce gaps, with SC Works actively involved in helping former military personnel make the transition to civilian careers, said Eric McAbee, Veteran’s Business Consultant for SC Works Upstate.

“We do a lot of employer education as to how military skills translate to civilian jobs,” McAbee said. “For example, someone with aircraft electronics experience in the military has the equivalent of a two-year degree in aviation electronics.”

Veterans also tend to excel at soft skills – something employers say is increasingly important.

“Veterans show up and they have the ability to learn quickly,” McAbee said. “They are trained to understand the phrase ‘all other duties as assigned.’”

Veterans and others wishing to participate in the Feb. 24 virtual job fair are encouraged to go online to pre-register.

Job seekers also can take advantage of online workshops to assist with resume writing and interview skills. See virtual workshop options here.
