Editor’s Note: Anderson SC Living is partnering with Rettew Creative to expand the audience for Storefront Stories as area businesses continue to rebuild from COVID-19. Bobby Rettew and digital media students from Anderson University’s Communications program recorded the first Storefront Story on April 22, 2021 and have since captured the experiences of almost 30 downtown businesses. Look for a Storefront Story every Wednesday here at Anderson SC Living.

Figs Beanery & Creamery opened in downtown Anderson in September 2012, but its historic location dates back to the early 1930s.

The site at the corner of Main and Earle Streets in the heart of The Electric City originally was a Sinclair service station where area residents bought gas and other amenities. Owner Jimmy Newton says Figs honors the history of the location by incorporating antiques into the restaurant’s décor.

In September of 2018, Figs Beanery & Creamery changed its name to Figs Café  & Farmacy and expanded by adding a market that features local goods and produce from across the region. It also expanded its coffee shop to feature fresh-roasted offerings from Bridge City Coffee and Methodical Coffee in Greenville.

Newton gives his employees all the credit for Figs’ ability to weather the coronavirus storm.

“My Storefront Story is my employees,” Newton said. “If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here. It’s all about working together and my employees are very strong in what they do.”

A favorite downtown destination for breakfast, lunch, coffee and ice cream, Figs offers indoor and outdoor seating.
