Anderson has been named one of the best places to live and retire now by AARP.
AARP, The Magazine regularly lists great places to live on a modest income. But in its first assessment since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the magazine revised its criteria. AARP’s Livable Communities team and the AARP Public Policy Institute worked with magazine editors to come up with 14 objective data points by which to assess American communities in this new reality.
From there, a set of communities emerged that is full of surprises, according to magazine editors. “A few big cities you might not expect to be retirement-friendly, and smaller towns that are hardly known outside their region,” the editors said of the list.
Gathering input from AARP state offices and regional journalists, the process yielded nine cities that have: a comparatively low cost of living; great access to nature and recreation; relative ease of getting around; quality health care systems; and a strong sense of community. All of the featured communities have strong job markets or are good candidates for remote work.
AARP cites Anderson’s vibrant arts community, strong health care system, programs for seniors and recreational opportunities at nearby Lake Hartwell as reasons for the ranking.
In addition to Anderson, South Carolina, AARP’s Best Places to Live list includes: Cedar Falls, Iowa; Idaho Falls, Idaho; Jackson, Tennessee; Fort Worth, Texas; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Lansing, Michigan; Provo, Utah; and Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
