Editor’s Note: Anderson SC Living is partnering with Rettew Creative to expand the audience for Storefront Stories as area businesses continue to rebuild from COVID-19. Bobby Rettew and digital media students from Anderson University’s Communications program recorded the first Storefront Story on April 22, 2021 and have since captured the experiences of almost 30 downtown businesses. Look for a Storefront Story every Wednesday here at Anderson SC Living.

Developmental Center For Exceptional Children (DCEC) was established in 1974 and is the only preschool/day center serving children with special needs and different abilities in Anderson, Pickens, and Oconee Counties.

DCEC’s mission is to provide children living with disabilities a setting designed to meet their individual needs by coordinating with parents, guardians, teachers, therapists and doctors to provide appropriate instruction and a safe and encouraging environment.

“There are a lot of ways the pandemic has affected us,” said DCEC Executive Director Liz Baysden. “It’s impacted the children, it’s impacted their families, our staff and our business. These children need consistency and routines.”

Partnerships and community support kept funding coming in during the pandemic, Baysden said.

“Had we not had those funds, we wouldn’t be sitting here today,” she said.

This video story was crafted and produced by digital media students from Anderson University’s Communication Program. As an Assistant Professor of Communication and owner of Rettew Creative, Bobby Rettew led a team of students in the COM 351 Corporate Video Production class to create these stories. This project provided a unique opportunity where students were able to leverage their technical video production skills along with enhancing their soft skills by interacting with clients and connecting with the downtown Anderson business community.
