Goat kissing for a cause nets 3,000 cans of food at Belton, Honea Path Middle Schools

Date

Middle school students in Belton and Honea Path found the perfect motivation for collecting cans of food for those in need in their communities – the chance to see their teachers and principals kiss a goat.

“Our eighth graders came up with this plan on their own,” said JAG Specialist Katy Sauceman. “It really motivated the students to bring in cans because they wanted to be able to see the administration kiss a goat.”

The students donated 3,001 cans of food. Canned goods collected at Belton Middle School will go to Belton Interfaith Ministries Association for distribution in the Belton area. Food donations at Honea Path Middle School will stay in that community.

“The students wanted to give back to the community,” Sauceman said. “Community service builds self-esteem. Students learn goal setting and become part of something bigger than themselves.”

The canned food drive brought students together for a common cause at a time when they have limited interaction in the classroom and elsewhere because of social distancing and other Covid-19 restrictions, Sauceman said.

“It really unified the student bodies at both places.”
