History of Starr, SC

Once a vibrant stop along the Western Carolina Railway, Starr, SC, may have fewer than 200 residents, but its history reflects a time of great activity and prosperity. Founded in the late 1830s under the name Twiggs, the town was officially chartered in 1888 and renamed Starr in honor of Captain W.W. Starr, a key railroad official. Starr thrived as an agricultural hub, with early 20th-century stately homes like Evergreen Plantation showcasing the success of its local farmers.
