It’s one of the fastest growing sports in the country and Anderson County is getting in on the fun.
Pickleball is not only easier on the body, but it’s also a great way to socialize, says John Moore, Upstate Pickleball Member and 2016 Order of the Pickle recipient.
“When people play, they have success from day one, and when you have success you just want to play again and again,” Moore says.
Pickleball is the perfect sport for those that have played tennis or other sports in the past, have potentially aged out of those sports or suffered an injury.
“You still get to move and you’re active on the court, but you get to socialize a lot more,” says Moore.
To accommodate the pickleball craze, Anderson County Sports Complex has converted two tennis courts into eight pickleball courts to be used for league play and competitions, according to AC Sports Complex Athletic Coordinator Todd McCormick.
The courts are lighted, with lights remaining on until 9:30 p.m. each day.
Also, Special Olympics in Anderson and Greenville counties also are sponsoring a pilot pickleball program for Special Olympics South Carolina.
“What we develop in our two counties will become the statewide model from competitive pickleball for Special Olympics South Carolina,” said Anderson County PRT Division Director Glenn Brill.
