Anderson Cricket Club will hold its first tournament at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 25, at the Balloon Launch Field near Anderson Civic Center, and the public is invited to attend.

“All Anderson County people can come and watch so that they can see what the game of Cricket is about,” said Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, an Anderson area internist.

Cricket has been played in the Anderson area for about 10 years, according to Mohan Duvvada, an engineer with Electrolux Home Products. Now, thanks to Anderson County, players have a permanent concrete pitch – the rectangular central area of the cricket field used for pitches – on which to play.

“We do appreciate all the effort from the county to provide us with the grounds,” Duvvada said.

Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players each. The game is played on a field at the center of which is the 22-yard pitch with a wicket at each end.

Like a pitcher in baseball, a “bowler” propels the ball from one end of the pitch toward the wicket at the other end. When the bowler completes six “pitches,” another bowler comes on.

The batting side has one player at each end of the pitch, with the player at the opposite end from the bowler aiming to strike the ball with a bat. The batting side scores runs either when the ball reaches the boundary of the field, or when the two batters swap ends of the pitch, which results in one run.

The fielding side tries to dismiss each batter and prevent a run from scoring. When ten batters have been dismissed, the inning ends and the teams swap roles.
