A small sign on Old Williamston Road in Anderson points to a serene spot not too far from downtown that is perfect for hiking, jogging, birding and just being.
Tucked behind Anderson University’s Athletic Campus between Cox Creek and Rocky River, Rocky River Nature Park features six tree-topped trails offering short walks and wildlife viewing.
Recognizing the value and importance of Rocky River, Andersonians established the Rocky River Conservancy (RRC), an organization that works alongside Anderson University, the City of Anderson, Anderson County, Upstate Forever and other local environmental groups to provide green space through clean-up and preservation of Rocky River, its swamp and surrounding area.
At Rocky River Nature Park, RRC seeks to provide an active and passive outdoor recreational venue and wildlife habitat with environmental education opportunities. It also seeks opportunities to connect the Rocky River area with other planned community recreational and environmental resources to provide a comprehensive network of unique venues to promote a special sense of place in Anderson, South Carolina, according to the Conservancy’s website.
Plans for Rocky River Nature Park call for the preservation and development of up to 400 acres to include: wetland areas; open water for canoeing and kayaking; walking, biking and equine trails; and and education center.
Signs at the trail head off Old Williamston Road invite visitors to enjoy turtle nesting season at the park April 15 through July 15, but not to disturb Moms or nests. Bird watching also is a popular pastime at Rocky River Nature park with 149 species spotted there as of August 2019.
